WASHINGTON, District of Columbia — The July 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida became the catalyst for creation of the Black Lives Matter movement. The movement’s genesis was tweeting of the namesake Twitter hashtag — #BlackLivesMatter.
It’s been only in the recent months that the movement has captured the attention and subsequent ire of conservative media. Members of the movement have been labeled murders, terrorists, racists, and anarchists by many conservative media sources.
The Colored Folks Times-Dispatch (The CFTD) conducted a survey of over 150 prominent conservative media commentators and news outlets and asked them to rename #BlackLivesMatter.
Most respondents accused The CFTD of being a “racist, pro-black news site” and refused to participate.
However, 12 sources did submit suggestions, shown in the slideshow below.
When advised of the results, a spokeswoman for Black Lives Matter said, responding by telephone, they are not surprised by “attacks from racist, Confederate-flag-waving, cracker-controlled media.”
“Black people have seen it all before, no surprise,” the spokeswoman said. “It’s just another 1960-style, reactionary, racist-inspired, bigot-perpetuated COINTELPRO operation. But it just won’t work this time. We know what’s up.”
